Love Kitchen
Welcome to the melty, gooey center of Soft Landing, the Love Kitchen! Just like the heart of a home, the Love Kitchen is intended to be a warm place for ALL SOFT LANDERS (not just LK pod or Supper Clubs) to come together, share a story, and cook yummy food! You bring the marshmallows and the grahams and we'll provide the sticks and the fire!
How the kitchen works
-
The Love Kitchen is stocked with most (if not all) basic cooking and food prep supplies. Propane stoves, pots, pans, cutting boards, knives, serving dishes, cooking utensils, etc. These items are free for any CSL camp members to use at any time during the event. Also, certain food items such as spices and cooking oils are communal. Personal dishes and cutlery for eating (plates/bowls/forks/spoons) will be in very short supply and in general, campers are expected to provide their own personal dishes and cutlery for meal consumption.
-
The Love Kitchen facilitates (but is not in charge of or responsible for) a voluntary, cooperative, shared meal preparation plan known as the Supper Club. Love Kitchen will interface with the various supper clubs in order to help coordinate meal times to ensure that the kitchen doesn’t get too overwhelmed at any one time. Beyond that, each supper club is responsible for any other logistics related to their meal planning, prep, cleanup, etc. For more information, click here.
-
Everyone is ultimately responsible for washing their own dishes and cleanup even if they cooked food to share with others (this is particularly applicable to the supper clubs.) The Love kitchen provides cleaning supplies and grey water collection which we encourage everyone to use. Please have a plan for cleanup after your meals and don’t leave uneaten food or unwashed dishes in the kitchen for hours on end. If you’d like to generously donate food, you must label with your name and pod. On the day the man burns, all donated food that’s left will be returned to each pod to take care of if the individual camper has left.
To keep the cooking and serving process moving, it is critical that dirty dishes and utensils turn into clean ones efficiently at the cleaning station. First, wipe off as much of the food as possible with a paper towel. Second, spray soapy water on dishes and scrub the rest of the food off. Third, rinse with bleachy water to disinfect, and finally clean water to rinse. All of the dish washing will be done over a large bin that catches water for collection in grey water jugs through creative use of funnels. Voila! (We may or may not be introducing a gravity drainage system this year. Fingers crossed!) The dishes should be placed on a drying rack with a baking sheet below it to collect any water drips. Ensure dishes don’t get left in the bins that collect the grey water because they get very gross (Eww David!!!) While the kitchen is communal, your dishes are not. In the spirit of radical self reliance, please do not leave your dishes for others to do. In the unfortunate event that someone has left their dishes behind, if you feel so moved, please do a few extra dishes to help out our kitchen volunteers.
-
In order to store food in a communal Love Kitchen cooler, it is required to place the food in a ziplock bag (even if it’s pre-packaged) and label it with your name and pod name. This is still true even if donating food to the camp. Any unused food still in the coolers the day the man burns will be returned to the person/pod that placed it there. Also, please note that meat will only be allowed to be stored in one of the coolers. Signage will indicate which one.
-
Love Kitchen does not provide communal drinking water. The water jug in the kitchen is reserved for cleaning purposes only.
-
Campers should come to the Love Kitchen prepared to handle their own garbage and food waste. In future years we hope to implement a functional compost collection and processing system in the Love Kitchen, but for now we ask for everyone to please handle their own.
